We prepared our own dinners in the fully equipped kitchen, but several resto options are available nearby. The house has direct views of Sigiriya and is perfectly located for day trips to all the great cultural sites of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, etc. Chris & Anu are gracious hosts and helped us with suggestions and information. "Karanda Retreat" - is named after the Karanda trees that surround it. It is Located on one & half acre of land with a variety of vegetation ranging from the tall forest trees to creepers of the scrub and the grassland which are home to a variety of insects, reptiles, mammals and birds. It is the surrounds that makes Karanda Retreat special for the lover of the wilderness. The waterhole in front of the bungalow and the wet-weather streamlet that flows at the rear boundary adds another dimension to the landscape and the environment. Hornbills (both species) frequent the tall trees, scimitar babblers the scrub, snipe and the painted storks the marshy grassland, and soaring overhead are eagles. Frogs and dragon flies inhabit the waterhole (an otter was once seen), hare and mongoose the grassland, and the elephants walk through.
The trees are a favourite haunt of all three species of Monkeys (the Langur, the Leaf Monkey and the Toque). During the drought, when all the neighbouring tanks dry out, water is pumped into the base of the waterhole and a host of fauna, including sambhur and elephant come to quench their thirst.
